Scouting For Food

By Mr. Hester

What started back in 1985 in the greater St. Louis Missouri area as a “Good Turn” idea quickly evolved into a national flagship program for the BSA. For the last 35 years, communities across the country have become familiar with the pre-holiday march of boy scouts thru family neighborhoods collecting donated food items to give to local food banks. Many community food banks have become reliant on the massive pre-holiday influx of food to help keep their stocks full at a critical time of year.

The very first Scouting food drive in St. Louis netted 750,000 cans of food. Fast forward to 2021 and nationally, scout troops across the country now collect tens of millions of pounds of food. This is a very big deal for a lot of communities. And, it’s a very big deal for Scouting.

“Scouting For Food is a ‘win-win’ in that it not only serves those in need, but it also results
in residents associating Scouting with the good feeling they get from doing something Kind”
– Scouting Wire

So, can you see what a simple idea and a little scout spirit can sometimes turn into??  Be a messenger for good and be sure to always do a “Good Turn Daily”!

Trivia

Indonesia has the highest number of Scouts

The national Scouting organization of Indonesia, Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia, has over 17 million members making it the world’s largest Scouting organization.

Many think that as it originated in the UK, UK Scouting would be the world’s largest but actually only comes in around ninth (as of 2012).

Jokes

Three racehorses were in the stable waiting for the big race. Trying to psych each other out, they began bragging.

First horse, 'I've been in 38 races and have only lost twice.'

Second horse, 'Well, I've been in 47 races and have never lost.'

Third horse, 'Huh, I've never lost either and I even beat Secretariat twice.'

Just then, they heard a chuckle by the stable door, and there was a greyhound dog walking up to them.
The greyhound said, 'That's nothing. I've been in over 200 races and have won every one by at least 3 lengths.'

First horse, 'Wow! That's amazing - a talking dog!'

A guy goes to a psychiatrist. 'Doc, I keep having these two dreams. First I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam; then I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam. It's driving me crazy. What's wrong with me?'

The doctor replies: 'You gotta relax. You're two tents.'

Scoutmaster Minute

Why.

Out of the thousands of languages in the world what do you think is the most powerful word in all of them?

It's Why

Every since you learned to speak you have asked this simple but powerful question.

At first it was because you were in wonder of the world around you then a little later to gain knowledge.

As time goes on we lose sight of the why and the power it holds in our lives. we just keep our heads down and move forward like sheep. Accepting things at face value.

Don't get me wrong, we still ask it but generally not in a positive way. Why do I have to do this? Why do I need to know this? You can be different by finding your why again.

You need to find

You see if you can find your why, then you will find passion again and once you have passion then you have a mission and purpose. With those you can overcome any obstacles in your life.

Find your why!
