Twelve People Have Walked on the Moon—Eleven Were Scouts
James Irwin (Apollo 15) was the only moonwalker not to have been any class of Scout at all. Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, actually radioed into a Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree on his way to the moon in 1969: "Hello to all my fellow Scouts at Farragut State Park in Idaho…Apollo 11 would like to send them best wishes."

My car horn wasn’t working, so I took it to a scout.
The scout fixed it and said, “Beep repaired!”
A loaded mini van pulled in to the only remaining campsite. Four children leaped from the vehicle and began feverishly unloading gear and setting up the tent. The boys rushed to gather firewood, while the girls and their mother set up the camp stove and cooking utensils. A nearby camper marveled to the youngsters' father, "That, sir, is some display of teamwork."
The father replied, "I have a system; no one goes to the bathroom until the camp is set up."
This month we would like to take a moment to recognize the following people who have contributed so much time and energy to the success of our troop.
Mrs. Friend has served as our Committee Chair since 2018. She is responsible for so much effort and time which helps keep the troop running, but is unfortunately not always very visible if you don't regularly attend committee meetings. She is stepping down from her role as Committee Chair and will now serve as the Treasurer. We appreciate all you have done for us Mrs. Friend!
Mr. Starr has served as our Treasurer since 2019. This is an important position which is also not always very visible. Nevertheless, his efforts have been a tremendous help to the troop. We appreciate all you have done for us Mr. Starr!
Troop 77 is an all volunteer organization. There are no paid positions in our troop. All of the numerous hours of work which go into providing our scouts with an incredible program each week are provided by our hard working and generous volunteers.
We need your help! There are always opportunities to volunteer for the troop. We have big jobs with official titles and we have little jobs which just need someone to help out with one time. If you don't help then someone else ends up doing two or three jobs to make up for it.
Please take a moment to look at our list of volunteer opportunities. When you find something that speaks to you, speak to us and let us know that you can do that! The complete list of volunteer opportunities is large and we're working on getting it all compiled, but here are just a few of the things with which we could really use your help. If you don't find something below, but feel inspired to help, please reach out to troop077webmaster@gmail.com and we'll help you find your calling in the troop.
Have you ever heard of a Boy Scout getting lost in the woods? Have you ever heard of TWO scouts getting lost in the woods together?
These are real events that happened in the past couple years...
A 7 year old cub scout was lost for 2 hours. He was on a hike with his den and fell behind the others, then slipped and fell. When he got back up, the rest were too far away to hear or see him. Two hikers found him and brought him to safety.
An 11 year old scout was lost for 4 days. After using the climbing tower at a camp, he walked the quarter mile to his campsite alone and became lost. He was found 5 miles away out of pure luck.
A 12 year old scout slipped in the lake and got his shoes wet. So, his dad told him to walk the 150 yards back to camp and get dry socks and shoes on. That was the last anyone has seen of him.
A 13 year old scout was lost for 3 days. On a hike, he fell behind the others and took a wrong turn.
Do you see any pattern in all these avoidable events?
Every one of them failed to use the BUDDY SYSTEM!
Two scouts never get lost.
You aren't using the buddy system for yourself - you're doing it for your friend so he doesn't get lost and for his family so they don't worry. The buddy system is THE most important rule we have - more important than having a compass or first aid kit or anything else. Scouts should never be without a buddy.
